MONTREAL, QUEBEC — Many children today have never experienced life without the internet. Advances in technology, like smartphones and apps, allow us to answer questions, interact with one another, and even entertain ourselves all with the press of a button. Previous research has shown the risks that come with overusing technology. Now, in a recent study, researchers have uncovered a link between depression and problematic internet use (PIU) among teenagers.
In Helsinki, Finland study authors collected data from one thousand seven hundred and fifty teenagers over three years. The international team analyzed the data to determine possible causes of PIU, whether it varies in older teenagers (sixteen to nineteen years old), and the effects of PIU on that particular age group.
LONELINESS MAY BE A ROOT PROBLEM
The researchers found three primary reasons for PIU, one of which is loneliness. Previous studies have also found loneliness to be a determinant of PIU. Described as requiring private relationships that satisfy, loneliness is often an element for those that lack gratifying friendships. Another definition of loneliness is that the perception that one is alone, which may cause feelings of isolation.
Another determinant of PIU researchers discovered is that the quality of parental guidance and discipline. The researchers found that teenagers with parents who show interest and care displayed lower levels of PIU, whereas those with neglectful parents showed higher PIU. The researchers noticed that paternal and maternal behaviour had different effects on internet use.
Maternal care, especially, displays a connection to lower PIU, indicating that good mother-child interactions may reduce the will to excessively using the web. Conversely, neglect from the daddy shows a link to greater PIU. Researchers believe this is because a teenager’s capacity to create personal boundaries is affected by a lack of discipline and limitations.
WHO IS MOST IN DANGER OF PROBLEMATIC INTERNET BEHAVIOUR ?
When analyzing the effect of gender on PIU, girls were less likely to participate in PIU than boys. Previous studies have found that boys are more susceptible to compulsive behaviours and may have other alternatives such as watching videos on YouTube, pornography or gaming. Similar studies have found that girls are more inclined to use the web for socialization.
Consequences of PIU include symptoms of depression, increased drug abuse, and decreased academic achievement.
“Our study tries to know this relationship during a bi-directional or reciprocal way,” says István Tóth-Király, a Horizon Postdoctoral Fellow at the Substantive-Methodological Synergy lab at Concordia University, during a release. “We think that PIU and depressive symptoms are likely to be co-occurring rather than one determining the opposite. They likely reinforce each other over time.”
Increases in drug abuse and an overall decrease in academic achievement were also found to be consequences of PIU. Both seem to co-occur with PIU.
According to Tóth-Király, teenagers within the middle of adolescence tend to use the web quite the other time. The study found that teenagers seem to decrease their internet time as they mature and create boundaries for themselves.
Romantic relationships can also play a task within the decrease of internet use. Tóth-Király notes that although it is going to appear to be an overuse to oldsters, being on the web for long periods of your time is not always harmful.
“If adolescents spend tons of your time on the web but it does not impact their psychological state or their grades or does not seem to possess any substantial negative consequences, then we cannot say this is often problematic behaviour,” the lead study author concludes.
