Who has Johnny Depp had
relationships with? His whole dating and marriage history.
The
defamation trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard may go down in history as
one of the most bitter breakups ever. But, before he met and eventually
divorced Heard, what do we know about Depp's romantic life? Here's a look at
all of the star's prior marriages and relationships.
Allison,
Lori Anne (1983–1985)
Depp's
first notable relationship was his marriage. When Depp was only 20 years old,
he married Lori Anne Allison. Allison was born in 1957, thus she was six years
older than Depp when they married. She was the younger sister of Depp's band,
The Kids, at the time. Despite meeting in their native Florida, the pair
quickly relocated to California. Allison became a successful make-up artist
while Depp pursued a series of odd jobs, and she was key in gaining her
then-husband one of his first major acting breakthroughs by introducing him to
client Nicholas Cage. Depp's breakthrough role in A Nightmare on Elm Street was
aided by the actor.
Unfortunately,
Depp's youth and the early phases of his successful acting career made
long-term relationships impossible. The couple divorced in 1985 due to
irreconcilable disagreements, although they are still friends. Lori A., her
married name, continues to practise as a professional make-up artist. Depp, and
celebrity clients like Adam Ant and Christina Applegate. Depp also has his own
Serendipity lip gloss collection.
Sherilyn
Fenn 1986 – 1989
Depp
began dating future Twin Peaks star Sherilyn Fenn after meeting during the
shooting of a student film. "When we were just starting out in the
company, we went out for two and a half years," Fenn told The Big Issue. He
was quite charming. My first love was him... I had discovered true love. Even
though he wasn't on the same road, the love and connection were strong
enough—cooking meals, hanging around, laughing and crying."
Fenn
and Depp eventually divorced amicably, but she still considers him a friend.
Jennifer
Grey 1989
Following
his breakup with Fenn, Depp had a brief relationship with Dirty Dancing actress
Jennifer Grey. Though brief, the relationship appears to have been intense, and
Grey and Depp were supposedly engaged for a time, with intentions to marry in
1990, according to ET. The couple's love for each other, however, appears to
have run its course before their planned wedding date.
Winona
Ryder 1989 – 1993
Ryder
and Depp were probably Generation X's "It" pair. It was love at first
sight for the duo when they first saw each other at the premiere of Ryder's
Great Balls of Fire. Depp told Rolling Stone, "It was a classic look, like
the zoom lenses in West Side Story, and everything else gets fuzzy."
"That's when I realised." "It wasn't a lengthy minute, but it
was suspended," Ryder acknowledged.
They
eventually met at Hollywood's fabled Chateau Marmont and were engaged five
months later, Depp sporting a "Winona Forever" tattoo on his arm.
"I'm being completely honest with you when I say there has never been
anything in my 27 years that compares to the emotion, I've had with Winona...
It's like some kind of bonding atom or something. When you experience
something, it's not the same as when you assume it's a genuine thing. The truth
has enormous power. "Now I understand." According to Shownews, Depp
stated. "Believe me, I didn't get this 'Winona forever' tattoo lightly...
Her eyes make me sick."
Tattoos,
like relationships, aren't meant to be permanent. Depp's Edward Gorey-inspired
courtship with Ryder fizzled out before they reached the altar, and Depp
quickly changed his tattoo to read "Wino Forever," perhaps tragically
poetically. "It was my mistake to be as open with Winona as I was,"
Depp said to The Los Angeles Times in 1993, "but I felt if we were honest,
it would crush that curiosity monster." Instead, it fueled it, allowing
individuals to believe they were a part of it."
Ryder
is still friends with Depp and recently testified in his libel action against
UK publication The Sun, which was dismissed in 2020.
Juliette
Lewis 1993
Following
his breakup with Ryder and her own breakup with Brad Pitt, Juliette Lewis and
Depp had a brief affair. They met on the set of What's Eating Gilbert Grape in
1993. They are still friendly and posed for photos together at the 2016 Art of
Elysium Heaven Gala in Los Angeles, which honoured designer Vivienne Westwood.
If Depp's engagement to Ryder was a fairy tale romance, his tumultuous but hot
and heavy relationship with supermodel Kate Moss may have been the most
representative of the decade's celebrity excesses. In 1994, the two met at East
Village's Cafe Tabac, a favoured hangout for the decade's celebrities, and
embarked on a four-year relationship marked by highs and lows. According to
PageSix, Depp once damaged a hotel room with Moss in the Upper East Side's Mark
Hotel in a manner suitable for rock and royalty, blaming the event on an
armadillo he claimed he spotted in the closet. Depp was later charged $9,767 in
hotel damages.
"There's
nobody who's ever really been able to take care of me," Moss told Vanity
Fair after the couple's 1998 separation. For a while, Johnny did. I was
convinced by what he stated. If I asked, "What do I do?" he would
tell me. That's what I missed. I had completely lost my sense of who I could
trust. Nightmare. Crying for years and years. Oh, the tears!
Vanessa
Paradis 1998 – 2012
After
meeting on the set of The Ninth Gate, Depp began dating French actress and
singer Vanessa Paradis. For a time, it appeared that he had finally found
someone with whom he might create a family. Paradis gave birth to Depp's first
child, daughter Lily-Rose Melody Depp, in 1999 while the pair remained in the
singer's native France. In 2002, his son John Christopher "Jack" Depp
III was born. "You cannot plan the kind of deep love that results in
children," Depp said of parenthood to the Associated Press. It wasn't an
intentional decision to become a father. It was all part of the amazing journey
I was on. It was predetermined. "At long last, the math worked."
After
14 years together, the pair unfortunately divorced in 2012. "Paradis didn't
have it easy. It wasn't easy on me, and it wasn't easy on the kids," Depp
subsequently told Rolling Stone. It doesn't change the fact that you care about
that person and that she is the mother of your children, and you'll always know
each other and be in each other's lives because of those children. Make
the best of the circumstance if you can."
Amber
Heard 2012 – 2016
Johnny
Depp and Amber Heard met in 2009 while filming The Rum Diary in Puerto Rico.
Following their breakups with their previous partners — Heard was dating
photographer and artist Tasya van Ree before meeting Depp — the two embarked on
an intense and tumultuous relationship, eventually marrying in a civil ceremony
in February 2015. Heard filed for divorce and later obtained a temporary
restraining order against Depp after the marriage became tumultuous. In 2016,
the couple reached an agreement, and their divorce was formalised in January
2017. "Relationship
was incredibly passionate and at times tumultuous, but always bonded by
love," the two said in a joint statement, according to The New York Times.
Neither
party has made fraudulent claims for financial gain. There was never any aim of
physical or mental harm," the couple became increasingly enmity over the
years, culminating in the ongoing defamation action in Virginia.
