Add Nearby’ feature turns Snapchat into a hookup app
It's like an ephemeral dating app.
Snapchat recently updated its software, altering how individuals snap and share photographs and videos with their peers. Along with simply tapping once to view snaps and adding a selfie as your Snapchat profile photo, we now have the Snapchat Add Nearby Friends function, which allows people to identify friends based on proximity rather than a username.
You'll only appear on someone's nearby friend list if you're also logged into Snapchat and have the nearby friends list open. You will appear on everyone's list until you exit that screen. Your username will remain on the screens of friends who have already opened it, but no one else will be able to add you via location until you both open it again.
Using Snapchat ‘Add Nearby’
Ambient location sharing has been attempted to capitalize on by social applications as a way for people to grow their communities and meet one another—dating apps like Grindr and Tinder match mates based on location, and even Facebook has attempted to convince people to share their location locations to meet up with other people.
Snapchat's new upgrade may be handy for users who wish to interact with people they know in real life on Snapchat. Consider going to a club or a concert with friends and periodically opening Snapchat to see who else is doing the same—you'll be sure to run into individuals who share your interests and can add them as friends to continue the relationship once you leave the location.
Snapchat as a dating tool is now theoretically viable, albeit both parties must be looking to add some friends or potential partners to their contact lists. However, if Add Nearby becomes famous as a gateway to romance, more individuals may find matches on Snapchat rather than traditional dating apps that push you to swipe right or left.
Because Snapchat does not have as much publicly available personal information as Facebook or Tinder, the friends you make based on location will only know what you choose to tell them.
The disadvantage of adding friends with similar interests to your Snapchat is the creepy aspect of allowing someone you don't know and don't want to know to add you as a friend. Given Snapchat's popularity among young people, youngsters may be continually opening the feature at school or football events, and spectators who have no business associating with children will be able to add them as friends.
There is no way to opt-out, but if you never open the menu, you won't be on anyone's list. According to Snapchat, the feature is intended to help users find friends in their "immediate vicinity," which includes places like coffee shops and movie theatres.
Simply tap the ghost at the top of your camera screen and select "Add Friends > Add Nearby" to add nearby friends. If you are in the same area as someone who has done the same, a username will display on the list, and you can add them just like any other friend.
