What is Labor force participation in India?
Labor force participation in India refers to the percentage of working-age individuals who are either employed or actively seeking employment. According to the latest available data (as of my knowledge cutoff date of September 2021), India's labor force participation rate (LFPR) was estimated at around 40%, which is relatively low compared to other countries.
The LFPR for men in India was estimated at around 75%, while for women it was around 21%. The gender gap in LFPR in India is one of the widest in the world, and it has been a matter of concern for policymakers and social activists.
Factors that contribute to low LFPR in India include low levels of education, lack of opportunities, and social and cultural factors that discourage women from entering the workforce. However, there have been efforts to increase LFPR in recent years, such as the government's initiatives to promote entrepreneurship and skilling programs for young people.
